The First Niles Sign Comes Down
"In the midst of the real estate boom in 1923, Harry Chandler, publisher of the Los Angeles Times, who has already grabbed acres of desert land, is sensing a similar opportunity in the Hills. He has teamed up with movie director Mack Sennett, who will oversee the investment company to develop the land.
To tune everyone else into the same signal that they are picking up, Chandler has erected letters, each standing 50 feet tall. The HOLLYWOODLAND is spelling out an invitation to up-and-comers and wishful thinkers alike that is hard to ignore. To enhance the effect, the sign is lit by 4,000 light bulbs. In a nearby cabin is a full time maintenance man whose sole job is to change them."
